Pastors and Staff

Mike Burchfield

Mike Burchfield

Preaching Pastor / Elder

Bio…

After serving as a church planter and relief worker in Asia for five years, Mike joined the ministry team of the West Hills Community (known then as the Hillside Church) in 1987. Serving first as an associate, Mike became the lead pastor in 1989. His passion is to see a people follow Jesus and mature in their relationship with Him and to see gospel centered, church planting churches established throughout Santa Clara County, the San Francisco Bay area and beyond.

Mike took his education at State Technical Institute in Memphis, Tennessee, Mid South Bible College, William Carey Int’l University and Western Seminary;

He also serves as a chaplain for the local police department, is a member of the Acs 29 Network for church planting and is in process of earning certification as a professional leadership and relationship coach.

David Frederick

David Frederick

Associate Pastor / Elder in Training

Bio…

David joined the staff of West Hills in Jan of 2013 after spending 9+ years as a student ministry director at Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church. David started following Jesus as a high school student in Morgan Hill after being invited to youth group by some friends. After high school David enrolled at San Jose State to pursue his undergraduate degree in Social Science with the hopes of becoming a teacher. It was at this time that he first started to volunteer in youth ministry which eventually became a part time and then full time ministry position. The Summer of 2004 was a big time for David. In June David graduated from SJSU and started youth ministry full time at MHPC and then in July married his high school sweetheart Pamela. Realizing a desire for more biblical and theological education, David enrolled in a Master of Divinity program at Western Seminary which he completed the summer of 2010. It was at this time that David felt God’s leading to pursue pastoral ministry, which would eventually lead him him to West Hills a few years later.

David has two ministry passions. The first is to teach the Word of God and the second is to equip people to use their spiritual gifting for God’s kingdom. It is great that the two so often go hand in hand. A lot of transformation happens as people interact with the bible, as well as when they experience the grace of God in action through service and the inevitable stretching that comes with using their spiritual gifts. It is a privilege to walk alongside people in this element of discipleship.

David loves spending time with his wife and his four kids. Likewise, he is working hard to teach them to love baseball (Go Giants!). David spends much of his free time reading, drinking coffee, running, cycling and playing music.

Brad Mortensen

Brad Mortensen

Executive / Elder

Bio…

I am a native Californian having been born and raised in Santa Clara. I attended San Jose State University where I completed a B.A. Economics and an M.S. Accounting. After college I received a CPA credential and worked as a consultant serving international clients. In 2005 the Lord blessed me with the opportunity to transition from Silicon Valley into vocational ministry. I completed an M.A. Biblical Counseling degree at The Master’s College in 2009 to better equip me for the work the Lord has called me to do. I currently live in Morgan Hill with my wife Colleen and our children Hannah, Essie, Elle and Mario. Colleen is my constant help in ministry, serving in the areas of missions and ministry to women and young mothers. Prior to our marriage, Colleen served as a missionary in Albania, teaching English and working within the church.

I became a Christian in high school as the result of the witness of another student (the gospel was new to me as I did not grow up in the church). The years that followed were marked by a slow but steady spiritual growth and a desire to enter missions. After college, I struggled spiritually as I grappled with career pressures and the fruit of my own spiritual compromise. This season ended when the Lord confronted me with my sin and showed me in a way I had never comprehended before the beauty of the gospel. Because the Lord started putting me in situations where I was informally counseling others I began taking counseling classes at The Master’s College to become better equipped for ministry. One of my passions in ministry is to connect with people who are grappling with the messiness of real life and help them connect where they are with what it means to walk with Jesus in the “real life” world that we live in.

Xavier Reyes

Xavier Reyes

Pastoral Resident / High School / Young Adults

Bio…

If you know anything about me you know that I’m very grateful for my salvation. In 2010 God saved me from a very sinful life that included women, drugs, and money to name a few. It’s through series a really hard things such as two abortions that God completely broke me and caused me to see the depths of my utter sinfulness and need for a savior. Around a year after I came to know the Lord I felt really strong call into pastoral ministry. I’m being trained theologically and biblically at Moody Bible Institute and have further aspirations to do more graduate work as the Lord leads me. The desire of my heart is to preach Christ and to equip men and women to live lives to their fullest potential in Jesus Christ. I enjoy watching Dodger games, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
Debbie Kenyon

Debbie Kenyon

Minister to Children

Bio…

“A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in or the kind of car I drove …. But the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child” .. (Taken from Successories) Debbie has changed the last line to say, “But the world may be different because Jesus used me to plant “seeds” in the life of a child”. Debbie’s desire is to see children make a decision to follow Jesus at an early age and continue on the narrow path throughout their life.

Debbie is an example of a “seed” planted in Children’s Sunday School during her elementary years. Born and raised in San Jose, California, she put her faith in Jesus during her 7th grade summer Hume Lake Christian Camp. Though in her high school years, she choose to do her “own thing” and ignored her faith, but the Lord had other plans for her.

Debbie rededicated her life after a series of life changing events and totally surrendered to God in 1982. Leaving her profession of 18 years, the Lord lead her to a total career change .. Leaving the hair industry and giving Debbie a heart for ministering to children.

In 1986 Debbie’s family were asked to leave Los Gatos Christian Church to help begin a new sister church in San Jose, known as South Valley Christian Church. It was there that she began her journey in the Children’s Ministry volunteering as a director for 6 years. In 1991 another partnership was formed with Hillside Church of Morgan Hill, now known as West Hills Community Church and Debbie was asked to serve as the Children’s Minister. Presently on staff full time and thanking God for this awesome privilege of serving children for the Kingdom of Christ.

Married since 1971, Don and Debbie have a son and daughter and have lived in Morgan Hill since 1986.

Leslie Carmichael

Leslie Carmichael

Public Relations / Minister to Children

Bio…

Leslie joined the staff of West Hills in February 2015 and has been a member of the church since 2000. Leslie started following Jesus as a junior in high school after realizing that peace and joy could only be fulfilled by having a personal relationship with Christ Jesus and not in the things of this world.

After graduating from San Jose State University, she began a career in high-tech marketing. Her responsibilities in building partnerships with companies led her to travel the globe in effort of launching products and training. Although exciting, after marrying her high school sweetheart and having their first child, she no longer desired the long excursions away from home. She took time to be a stay-at home mom, while going back to obtain her credential to teach in Christian education. She began teaching second grade when her three children were old enough to attend the private school in which she taught. She later obtained her credential in Christian Administration and became the Principal of Junior High and worked to open a new private high school. At this point, The Lord began to create a desire in her heart to take a different role at West Hills. Leslie’s experiences in marketing and education would be utilized in introducing the community to Christ by means of engaging with larger community events offered through Chamber and Rotary. In addition, she would work in the development of children’s ministry programs that would help children obtain spiritual transformation toward Christ. Leslie is passionate about living out 1John 3:18 that states, “let us not love with words or speech, but with actions and in truth.” It is her desire to develop relationships and show Christ’s love to the community as a means of discipleship.

Leslie has been married to Eddie for 18 years and has three children ages 16, 14, and 10. She lives in Gilroy and is an active member of the Gilroy Planning Advisory Committee and is an advocate for breast cancer awareness. If not at West Hills, you can find her on the baseball fields for Little League, Christopher High sporting events or many of the local community events.

Danny and his wife, Tracey, have been married since January of 1992. They have two sons, Nathan (1996), Joel (1998), and a daughter, Erin (2000).

Robin Church

Robin Church

Office Administrator

Bio…

Robin was born and raised in the Bay Area. She grew up aware of God but never fully embraced him or his teachings. Many years passed before the Lord would change her heart. In early 2014 she felt the need to finally seek God’s word. Her path led her to West Hills Community Church where she would learn to truly follow Jesus Christ and come to know the awesome God that brought her here. He had a plan for her and it included sharing her testimony, being baptized and leaving a career as a theatrical hairstylist and makeup artist for over 20 years to serve in the church office.

She is thankful that her husband Ed was also called to faith at the same time and they were baptized at WHCC on the same day! They have been married since November of 1994.
